Three Nigerians who were detained in Saudi Arabia since August 2025 have finally regained their freedom after Saudi authorities found no evidence linking them to an attempted smuggling plot at Jeddah’s King Abdul Aziz International Airport. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebiefa, confirmed their release in a statement issued on Wednesday, bringing an end to their ordeal.
The detainees, whose names have not been disclosed, were initially arrested on suspicion of involvement in a scheme to smuggle prohibited substances through the airport. However, after thorough investigations, Saudi authorities determined that they had no connection to the attempted smuggling, leading to their release.
The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had been working to secure the release of its citizens, and the news of their freedom has been welcomed with relief and joy. The Ministry has not released further details on the circumstances surrounding the detention and release of the Nigerians, but it is expected that they will return home soon.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by Nigerians abroad and the importance of diplomatic efforts to protect citizens’ rights and interests.
