Nigeria has launched the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC), a move aimed at enhancing regional security, modernizing identity management, and facilitating free movement within West Africa. The card will serve as a travel document within the ECOWAS region, reducing pressure on Nigeria’s passport system and promoting economic growth.
The ENBIC features advanced biometric and cryptographic technology, meeting ECOWAS and international standards. It will improve identity verification, reduce document fraud, and disrupt cross-border criminal networks. The card is expected to boost commerce, enhance labour mobility, and promote tourism within the region.
Nigeria is the seventh ECOWAS country to deploy the ENBIC, following Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, Benin, The Gambia, and Sierra Leone. The launch is part of President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and security.
The Nigerian government plans to integrate the ENBIC with the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Public Key Directory, enabling seamless verification at airports and land borders. The Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) will also be introduced in January to assist stranded Nigerians.
