The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) is celebrating the remarkable achievements of Nigerians living abroad, including Commodore Kelechi Ndukwe’s historic promotion in the US Navy and other outstanding individuals.
Commodore Kelechi Ndukwe, a Nigerian-American, has made history with his promotion to Commodore of Destroyer Squadron 60 and Commander of Task Force 65, based in Rota, Spain. This achievement marks a significant milestone in his 20-year career, which began in 2003. Ndukwe previously made headlines as the first Nigerian-American to command a US Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG-97). His leadership and expertise have earned him recognition, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.
NIDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa praised Ndukwe’s achievement, stating it showcases the resilience, creativity, and competitive spirit of Nigerians globally. The US Mission in Nigeria hailed Ndukwe’s promotion as an inspiration, highlighting his dedication and exceptional professionalism.
NIDCOM has been actively promoting Nigerian culture, investment, and innovation abroad through partnerships with organizations like the Unveiling and Rebranding Nigeria Initiative (URNI) and the Friends of Nigeria in Europe (FON). The commission has also established State Diaspora Focal Point Officers across all 36 states to enhance engagement and mobilize diaspora resources for national development.
NIDCOM’s initiatives include the National Diaspora Day, National Diaspora Merit Awards, and the Diaspora Data Mapping Portal to foster connections and promote investment opportunities. The commission is also addressing challenges faced by Nigerians abroad, such as human trafficking and fraud, to rebrand Nigeria’s global image.
