Matilda Ndu Mmegwa, a Nigerian researcher, has been named the 2025 winner of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)-ESRC Impact Award. This achievement highlights Nigeria’s growing influence in global research, particularly in sustainable finance.
Mmegwa’s award-winning doctoral research, “Driving growth for SMEs via the use of sustainable finance: the case of Nigeria,” focuses on addressing the finance gap faced by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. Her work proposes a new Sustainable Finance model, emphasizing digital transformation to improve the SF ecosystem.
The ESRC-IAA Panel of Expert Reviewers praised Mmegwa’s research, stating it has an “extremely impressive list of beneficiaries” and is “remarkably ambitious in scope,” with potential for delivering real change.
Mmegwa’s research aims to boost Nigeria’s economic development, environmental protection, and social equity by promoting sustainable finance and efficient resource utilization.
