Just In: DEPORTATION DIPLOMACY: Libya Sends 80 Nigerian Migrants Back Home

Libya has deported 80 Nigerian migrants who were being held in various detention centers across the country, as part of efforts to curb irregular migration and ease overcrowding in holding facilities. The deportation was coordinated by the Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM) in collaboration with the Nigerian Consulate in Tripoli, and took place through Mitiga International Airport on Wednesday.

The migrants had been detained in different facilities across Libya for attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe through irregular routes. According to Migrant Rescue Watch, the deportation followed judicial orders issued by the Libyan Judicial Police. The Nigerian Consulate worked closely with Libyan authorities to ensure the returnees received proper documentation and consular assistance before their departure.

This move is part of Libya’s ongoing efforts to manage migrant flows amid growing international scrutiny. Human rights organizations have raised concerns over poor conditions in Libya’s detention centers, citing overcrowding, abuse, and exploitation. They urge African and European governments to strengthen safe migration channels and address the root causes of irregular migration.
