LATEST NEWS: Nigerians in the US Unite Against Military Intervention

Nigerians in the US have strongly rejected any suggestion of military intervention in Nigeria, following President Donald Trump’s threat to invade the country over alleged Christian persecution. A statement signed by Temi Aregbesola, President of the Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN), and 19 other Nigerian organizations in the US, described the threat as “dangerous and deceptive rhetoric”.

The groups emphasized that Nigeria is a sovereign nation and the protection of its citizens must remain in the hands of the Nigerian government, not foreign powers. They urged the Nigerian government to accept and initiate urgent collaboration with the US and international partners to share intelligence, training, technology, and logistical support to tackle insecurity.

The organisations also expressed deep disappointment at the inability of successive Nigerian administrations to halt the escalation of violence targeting communities, indigenous groups, and innocent civilians across the country. They called on the Federal Government to instantly strengthen its protection of all citizens, especially vulnerable communities, by deploying state and federal resources in coordination with local government authorities.

The groups further demanded a transparent public audit of security operations, accountability mechanisms for perpetrators, and support for victims and survivors of sectarian violence. They emphasized that Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” should serve as a wake-up call, not an excuse for external interference.
