LATEST NEWS: Nigeria Introduces Emergency Passport for Citizens Abroad

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced plans to introduce a Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) to strengthen identity management and enhance border governance. According to the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, the new document will replace the existing Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) and serve as a temporary single-entry travel document for Nigerians abroad whose passports have expired, been lost, or stolen.

The STEP will enable Nigerians abroad to return home in a secure and verifiable manner, and will be issued at designated Nigerian embassies and consulates. This initiative forms a key component of the NIS’s reform agenda, targeting the modernization of migration systems and improvement of service delivery.

The introduction of STEP aligns with the service’s commitment to robust identity protection, efficient consular support, and enhanced border management capabilities. The NIS aims to provide a more secure and efficient way for citizens to travel and return home, while also strengthening the country’s border governance.
