The Nigerian Senate has announced a significant change in leadership, appointing Senator Aniekan Bassey as the new Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations. This decision comes after Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was removed from the position.
Senator Aniekan Bassey’s appointment marks a new chapter for the committee, which is expected to strengthen ties with Nigeria’s diaspora community and promote the exchange of ideas between Nigerians at home and abroad. Bassey is a seasoned lawmaker from Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The removal of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan follows her suspension in March 2025 over alleged gross misconduct and a heated altercation with the Senate President. With Senator Bassey at the helm, the Senate is also set to review vice chairmanship positions to ensure a more equitable distribution of roles among senators.
