In an exclusive interview with Nigerians in Diaspora Media (TheNidm), Hon. Adegoh Paul Profit, President of NIDO Libya Chapter and Welfare Officer, NiDO African Continent, shared his insights on the experiences of Nigerians living in Libya. With almost three decades of residency in Libya, Hon. Profit offered a nuanced perspective on the challenges faced by Nigerians and the opportunities that exist in the country.
According to Hon. Profit, there are four categories of Nigerians in Libya: those who came to Libya to earn a living through legitimate means, those who were taken to rural areas in Libya due to security concerns, those passing through Libya en route to Europe, and those who engage in prostitution, theft, and other crimes.
Hon. Profit lamented that the latter categories are the ones causing problems for Nigerians in Libya, despite the country’s accommodating nature. He expressed concern about human trafficking and the suffering of many Nigerians in Libya due to carelessness and negligence from the Nigerian Embassy.
He revealed that he had sent several proposals to the embassy, including collaborating with the Libyan government to allow Nigerians to pay taxes and have a say in the country, importing Nigerian agricultural products into Libya, and regularizing every entry by Nigerians into Libya to combat human trafficking. Unfortunately, these proposals were met with indifference.
Hon. Profit suggested that the Nigerian government should react to the pleas of Nigerians in Libya and work with NIDO to regularize entries into the country. He also emphasized the need to address human trafficking and hold accountable those who aid such crimes.
Despite the challenges, Hon. Profit described Libya as a beautiful and accommodating country where genuine individuals can thrive. He encouraged Nigerians to leverage the opportunities in Libya and make a living without resorting to vices.
The interview highlights the complexities of the Nigerian diaspora experience in Libya and the need for collaboration between the government, NIDO, and other stakeholders to address the challenges faced by Nigerians in the country.
