Updates: Nigerians Top List of Africans Arrested for Drugs Trafficking in India

Over 100 Nigerians were arrested in India for drug trafficking last year, making them the most arrested African nationals and the second-highest overall. According to the Narcotics Control Bureau’s (NCB) annual report, 106 Nigerians were apprehended in 2024, with Nepalese citizens recording the highest number of arrests at 203.

The total number of foreign nationals arrested was 660, with the top nationalities being:

  • Nepalese: 203
  • Nigerians: 106
  • Myanmarese: 25
  • Bangladeshis: 18
  • Ivorians: 14
  • Ghananians: 13

India’s geographic location between the “Death Crescent” (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran) and the “Death Triangle” (Myanmar, Thailand, Laos) makes it vulnerable to international trafficking. The NCB has reported increased exploitation of coastal routes for smuggling synthetic drugs and precursors.

Recent cases include the arrest of a Nigerian couple in Goa for running a drug syndicate, with assets worth Rs 1.06 crore frozen, and arrest of three Nigerians in Chandigarh for trafficking 204.8 grams of crystal methamphetamine. In another incident, Navi Mumbai police arrested 36 Nigerians and seized drugs worth Rs5 crore.
