Latest News: Three Nigerians Sentenced to 96 Years in Prison for Car Theft

The Atasemanso Circuit Court in Ghana has handed down a combined 96-years prison sentence to three Nigerians, Francis Friday, Linus Agwazie, and Russell Ekenze, for their involvement in vehicle theft across Kumasi. The ruling reflects Ghana’s efforts to combat crime and protect citizens’ property.

The trio was arrested on June 20, 2025, following targeted investigations into stolen parked vehicles in Kumasi. On July 22, they were arraigned before the Atasemanso Circuit Court. Russell Ekenze pleaded guilty and received a 10-year sentence, while Francis Friday and Linus Agwazie pleaded not guilty but were later convicted and sentenced to eight years each on two counts, with sentences running concurrently.

Additional convictions saw all three receive 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labor on two counts each, also running concurrently, contributing to the total 96-years combined sentence. They’re currently serving their terms at the Kumasi Central Prison.

This case has sparked mixed reactions, with some viewing it as a necessary deterrent and others cautioning against profiling Nigerians. It adds to ongoing debates about migration, crime, and law enforcement in Ghana, following other cases like a Nigerian woman sentenced to 20 years for human trafficking and 50 Nigerians arrested for cyberfraud and trafficking.
