The number of irregular Nigerian migrants in Türkiye has significantly decreased from 9,000 to under 5,000, thanks to improved cooperation between Nigeria and Türkiye. Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, revealed this during a meeting with NiDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa, attributing the drop to strengthened collaboration between the two countries.
Poroy also highlighted that Nigeria previously ranked fourth among countries with the highest number of irregular migrants in Türkiye but has now fallen out of the top six. The Ambassador commended Nigerian authorities for working with Turkish counterparts to curb forged Schengen visas and falsified travel documents.
The meeting also discussed a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NiDCOM and the Turkish Embassy to promote economic partnership, increase investment, and create job opportunities for Nigerians.
